Lake George is a town a village and a beautiful lake and it is located in the Adirondack Park. I think the nicest place to stay is in or near Bolton Landing.
Lake George is a spring fed 32 mile freshwater lake dotted with many islands and great hiking trails on the mountains surrounding the lake. There are hiking rails are for all levels of difficulty. Buck Mountain, Tongue Mountain and Black Mountain offer some great hikes with magnificent views of the lake.
The best lakeside accommodations are small family run locations. Many family places offer cabins and cottages or a small motel style. Cottages come with a kitchen, cabins do not. These of course are not fancy places with turn down service and mints on the pillow. The Sagamore in Bolton Landing is the nicest place in the area for that type of accommodation.
There are of course some chain hotels but they are not lakeside and typically they are in Lake George Village. The Village is a T shirt shop kind of place – you will go there for the kids as it has the arcades and some kid fun things to do. But the beauty of the Lake is not found in the Village or Town of Lake George but on the lake.
You can rent a boat in Bolton Landing and see the lake – there are also large tour boats that will take you on the lake as well – I recommend either the Sagamore’s boat, the Morgan dinner cruise, or the Mohican Paradise Bay Cruise. Kids might prefer the Mohican ride.
There is a great variety of things to do in the area – there are many lakes, rivers and streams, for plenty of water activities from fishing, to boating to para sailing, numerous mountains for hiking too. We even have whitewater rafting – and in August the rivers are mild but still fun. There are amusement parks as well with roller coasters and several water parks too scattered about. Six Flags is a short drive from Bolton Landing – it has one of my very favorite Roller Coasters – the Comet. Old fashion wood roller coaster.
We have some fun and wonderful museums, including the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake and the WILD Museum in Tupper Lake. Also in the area we have art museums, horse racing museum and many others too. My kids (11 and 15) really enjoy the Adirondack Museum – we go back every few years.
Not to far from Lake George is Saratoga – there is world famous horse racing in August.
A whole summer would barely scratch the surface of all there is to do up here. You could expect temps in the low 80s August. And the travel time from Philly to this area is not bad two years ago I did the opposite run – Lake George to Philly
The water at the Lake is clear and calm. My children enjoyed jumping off pier into lake. Plenty of lifeguards standing by on alert.Lot’s of things to do on mainstrip. The Haunted House was our Favorite
